Learning with Fun @ Refresher Course in BU

Nostalgic moments at ASC Bharathiar University

To my dearest colleagues of the Refresher Course in Research Methods in Social Sciences at UGC - ASC Bharathiar University (October 2012 batch)

Thanks for all of you for accepting me as a representative and coordinating all the events in the best way. Initially the days would have moved slowly, but after the NBNP trip, it gained momentum as the outing had brought us a better understanding about each other.

I think you will have sweet memories except for the food served from the outside mess.

I wish to share some of my nostalgic moments with you…

The small naps which I used to have in the morning and noon sessions…

I have trouble now and I had to sleep from 3 - 5 pm yesterday. Hope things would turn back to normal when I meet my students tomorrow. But I should also thank the seasoned Resource persons who had inculcated a lot of ethical research procedures in us.

Thanks to the Director Saravana Selvan. S for sending out a strict message about attendance. Otherwise the team would not have stayed intact.

Thanks for my Bankers Rose Mary Francis and Rinu V Antony for maintaining the accounts and offering the Collection money of Rs.3,800. Thanks to all of you for not asking any queries on the amount spent.

Thanks to Radha, Sampath Rani, Kannan and Gayathri Madam for feeding us with their home made delicacies for the tea time.

Hope Hostel mates would have enjoyed the Home made juice. Many told that they had a comfortable sleep that night.

Thanks to Arul Prasad to sign as a witness for my Home loan - document registration at PN Pudur ( Actually we whisked away for that job during two after noon breaks).

Big thanks to mother nature for showering us with her pleasant blessings which turned our moods  into ecstasy and weather - salubrious.

Thanks to Jothiramalingam for arranging the  Valediction Lunch.

Hope many more thanks and sharing of memories would come from you in the comments section at the end of this blog.

Missing you all and waiting for an opportunity to meet again.

Media Education/Seminar at Pondicherry University

*Seminar on *

*MEDIA EDUCATION : COPING WITH TECHNOLOGY, CULTURE AND SOCIETY *

* *

*Organised by
Centre for Electronic Media**
*School of Media and Communication
Pondicherry University  Puducherry 605014 &

*Association of Communication Teachers - Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry*

Call for Papers

Media education is at the cusp of major transition and the growth of
technologies has further accentuated the need for contextualizing our
inquiry in understanding the audience whose agential ability includes not
only interpreting text but modifying it through participatory designs.
Further to the individual’s participation, the relationship between
technology and society has become (and has remained) an interesting domain
to explore with the arrival of the Internet and mobile phones. The
conglomeration of the traditional and digital media now accounts for a
radical shift in media literacy and how we engage with it. Interestingly, in
the emerging media literacy driven by the Internet and mobile phones,
children and adults have become composers of content critically engaging
with the media to an extent that the state-civil society relationship has
changed that underlies horizontal communication. However, this optimistic
development resides only in the urban colonies and the rural populace in
India is still far away from the Internet and the information contained
therein. Even where access is privileged, the differential media ecology in
various institutions, government spaces and state apparatuses create a
differentiated user engagement with media and its text. It also sets the
ca(u)se for a contextualized approach of media use that has social,
political, cultural and moral underpinnings.

The key question that needs to be addressed therefore is determining the
direction in which we need to orientate media education. For one, the
pedagogy will require us to invest efforts in discussing the avant-garde
cultural forms engendered by the media that are not mainstream but socially
embedded in the lives of many. Everyone has a major stake in the political
and social process as the (new) media provides an opportunity to all to
engage in civic debates and collectively participate or inform the
decision-making bodies. The laissez faire approach promoted by the Internet
brings the postmodern subject to the fore establishing its moorings in a
fluid and a liberalized space for a profound articulation of the self and
identity. In this context, it would be ideal to explore the Internet in
areas of feminism, cultural geography, information architecture, queer
studies, media activism to name a few. Far more intriguing inquiries into
questions of access and transparency in technologised governance and the
veiled governmentality of institutions will provide insights into power
dynamics as opposed to the democratic potential of the Internet and the
mobile phones.

The subject of ‘subject’ and the culture of use of media began or rather
flourished during the visual regime of television. It therefore would be
ideal to explore how television and the Internet have panned out as medium
for production and consumption. There is obviously a distinct transition
from television-mediated images (text) to the Internet-driven (including
mobile phones) multimodal content comprising games, wikis, blogs, websites
etc. The newer presumptions are what does media education constitute as its
contents page has expanded with the arrival of the digital media. The
considerable popularity the media in general has gained following the
‘digitality’ of content requires us to reformulate strategies and dynamics
of media pedagogy in turn re-appraising media and its cultural products.
That having been said, behind these cultural products there is an underlying
agenda corporates push through stealthily or otherwise into the content. The
seminar will examine the political economy of technologies to gain insights
into media structures, ideologies, citizenship and democracy, governance and
articulation of power in technology mediated interactions.

*Suggested themes for panels, papers and other presentations include (but
are not limited to):*

Media Education for Empowerment
Political Economy of ICTs
Media Ecology
State-citizen-Corporate Relationship through the lens of Media

Media literacy: Critical and informed citizenry
Politics of access and transparency in E-Governance
Internet and Participatory culture
Democratization of Communication
Children’s participation in media

International Conference on Birds at Coimbatore

Dear friends,

We all are aware about the winged visitors of Coimbatore. These birds - Pelicans, Painted storks etc., have arrived in smaller numbers this year is a worrying factor for us.

The problem of pollution, exploitation and encroachment is the deterring factor. The efforts of NGO’s - to fight for the visitors is gaining pace in Coimbatore. It was the scientific reports of SACON which helped us to prevent commercial exploitations.

Now to strengthen the documentation, their International Conference will help us to conserve the migratory as well as the local birds which depend on our 800 year old heritage structres.

Your participation in the International Conference is welcome. I am submitting the  following message from SACON for your consideration and I am forwarding this message as my personal option.

SACON is organizing an International Congress on Indian Ornithology during 19-23 November 2011 at Coimbatore. (The brochure which contains a brief on the Congress and various symposia envisaged, can be accessed in the conference website (www.iciosacon.in) also for more details).

The Congress would offer a platform for sharing experiences of researchers, conservationists and policy makers from India and abroad, to take stock of the knowledge base, to identify gaps and to deliberate upon strategies for conservation of birds and their habitats. Senior Wild-lifers, scientists and Protected Area Managers would attend the congress. Scientists from 25 states in India and many countries abroad have already submitted their finding for presentation in this conference. We expect about 300 wildlife scientists from India and abroad converging to Coimbatore during the period.

Apart from the scientific deliberations, SACON want to conduct this programme as an event of Coimbatore, where people at large of Coimbatore will also have a role in it. We are planning an exhibition showcasing the wealth of birds and other wildlife in India for the general public in connection with this occasion. This will create environmental awareness among public particularly among thousands of school and college students who are expected to visit the exhibition.

In connection with the conference we are planning to publish a symposium souvenir which will be released during the programme and it will contain scholarly articles from leading scientists and conservationists in India and abroad with messages national leaders and legendary personalities in the field. This souvenir also will be uploaded in the websites and will reach all over the world. We anticipate your support for this cause in the form of a sponsorship / complementary advertisement of your firm in the souvenir. The cheque/DD may be given in favour of The Director, SACON payable at Coimbatore. Those who are willing to contribute may please send the DD within one week in the address below.

Advt. Tariff for souvenir
Full page colour          : Rs. 20,000 Full page             B/W                 : Rs. 10,000

To postpone is to conserve - Ramachandra Guha

“To postpone is to conserve”, This is not an ordinary statement from any amateur, but from India’s best ever non fiction writer and historian, Padmabhusan Ramachandra Guha.

Guha made this statement while delivering the Salim Ali memorial lecture at Forest College, Coimbatore in the first week of March. He was talking on Ecological Town planning In India - Patrick Geddes way.

Excerpts from his speech:

Talks and thoughts about Wildlife in India was promoted by BNHS, Salim Ali to Sanctuary Magazine.

Thoughts on Forests were initiated from Brandis, Phule, Mor Ben to Chipko movement.

Thoughts on Farming were initiated from Howard, Kumarappa to Organic farmers.

Thoughts on Water were initiated from Bhattacharya, Tagore to Narmada and Tehri campaigns.

But there was only one person who initiated on Ecological Town Planning in India. He was Geddes from Scotland.

Environmentalism in India has ignored the cities. It  started against construction of large dam at Pune in 1921 hy Munshi.

Ninteenth century is known for its Carboniferous Capitalism -

Extortion of nature by man, machine, military and finance.

Respect to Nature, Democracy and Tradition was Geddes way of Town Planning.

Returning to nature is his concept where rights of children and women are protected.

We talk a lot about development and heritage preservation. Here to postpone is to conserve.

Town Planning should involve citizens. Top down approach in Town Planning will be a failure in this case said Ramachandra Guha.

Dr.P.Pramod, Nature Education Officer of SACON and Dr.P.A.Azeez, Director,  SACON stressed the importance of Ecological Town Planning for Coimbatore.

They highlighted how the eight heritage wetlands of Coimbatore are destroyed in the name of Eco and Entertainment tourism.
