Feedback for the blog and website: General comments / enquiries  (from 2009)
Hope this finds you in good health and cheer. I was searching for Hiking and Trekking clubs around Coimbatore and found your site quite interesting. I’m originally from Coimbatore but have been living abroad (now in Canada) for a short while. I’m visiting there for a month starting Jan 21 and would like to know if you can give me some tips on hiking around the area (spots and formalities, if any). I have been doing some hiking here in Canada (of course not at much as you) and truly enjoy the humbling experience of nature.
I would be happy to meet you and discuss on this when I get to Coimbatore, if your time permits. But will also be content if you could mail me. Thank you for your time.
Anand M-Pranesh, Canada
Thank you for this lovely collection of butterflies.  A book on South Indian butterflies was published about 2000, I think, but when I tried to buy a copy in 2002 it had already sold out. I took this photograph in December 2007 when I was with Dr V Ramakantha at a scrub forest site ? Maruthamalai (near a university campus).  I believe it is called the Common Jezebel Delia eucharis but unfortunately it is out of focus. I should like to see a good photo of this attractive species.

MG_9312 is White Orange Tip (faded/old specimen with lots of lost scales). Crimson Tip is wrongly identified.  It is Yellow Orange Tip. Crimson Tip has similar pattern but is white instead of yellow on the underside.  White Orange Tip is also wrong. It is Small Orange Tip Colotis etrida._MG_9293 is Tagiades gana also called Suffused Snow Flat, Immaculate Snow Flat or Large Snow Flat.  DSCN4203 is again Yellow Orange Tip, faded specimen.  DSC_0363 both are either Yellow Orange Tips or Great Orange Tips. Please check with the ID books. If you remember them to be larger than 50mm then they are Great Orange Tip.

When we cannot interpret the paintings, we should not give titles. This can be misleading.

Hi,  All the pictures are good but there is misinterpretation.  First of all its not 4000 years old paintings. it may be drawn in the neolithic age you can say around 2100 years back.  The paintings are not drawn with vegetable dyes( these type of dyes will not long lost for many years) since the rock is sedimentary  in nature.
Most of the  Archeologists  are of opinion that  the dyes were made up with quartzite stones with animal fats.  All the drawings are not paintings.  Some of  the pictures are  carved  one. In Indian archeological survey says it  is drawn in the age of  Neolithic but an American scholar in his writings interpreted wrongly.
If you trace back the history  of Kotagiri  you will not find much about it.  There is no evidence  how the place was explored.  All we hear about  this place is mere assumption.  The people who entered this area were known as KODA  from this only the place name was derived. Their main occupation at that time was pottery making and terracotta making.  These people were excellent painters on that time.  But unfortunately the population from this  community  is  very less.  Now the place is dominated by BADUGAS. As u said there was no invasion  to this place. The baduga people were agriculturists.  They had many cattle field or boundaries.  There usual leisure time activity was bullock fights after the victory the asked the Kota people to draw paintings in the rocks.  Still this is also an assumption given by archeology department. But no evidence.
Mr. Sullivan  who was the very first person to construct a bungalow at Kotagiri. This was the very first place where most of the Britishers  constructed their bungalows first because of its natural cool climate.  During the Britishers period only they started coffee plantations  but  unfortunately it was failed after that only they started  tea plantation.

Congrats for your enthusiasm and effort in nature watching and spreading the conservation message well through you excellent photographic skills. I would like to inform you that I have enjoyed all your photographs. Keep it up.
This mail I am sending to you to inform a mistake in the identification of a bird species in your archive. The one you have mailed last and identified as Pampadour Green Pigeons is wrong. From the photograph, it is very clear that it is Orange-breasted Green Pigeon (Treron bicincta).

Once again congrats and keep sending this kind of photos.

Greetings from Ottakoothan. My native place is Mamsapuram near Rajapalayam /Srivilliputhur & at present working in Chennai.Nice to talk to you today. As informed I am interested on Wildlife conservation and photography as a hobby.  I heard a lot of good things about you from my friends about your interest on conserving the Wildlife in India which is very much required at this moment otherwise this will become history to the future generation.
I visited few sanctuaries like Mudumalai, Tholpetty, Muthanga, Mundanthurai and of course in western Ghats located adjacent to Srivilliputhur and Rajapalayam which was also near my native place.  I love western Ghat and been there from my childhood in and around that place. But now only I started capturing the place filled with Animals and Birds which was exiting and great. I am also a member from PSM Photographic Society of Madras.
Kindly keep me posted on your assignments towards Wildlife conservation and I will be glad to be part to preserve the nature. Also include us in census.

Enquiry : Hello Mr. Jayaprakash,

I was informed about your website and about your interest in nature by my father, Mr. Nandagopalan (Secretary, PSG Schools), yesterday. I took a look at your website and pictures and it is rather impressive. I myself am an ardent lover of nature. So much so that I left my IT job in Wipro two years back and came down to Australia to pursue an Environmental Masters degree. I have finished my degree last month and am now working on coastal wetland projects. My area of interest and expertise is wetlands ecology and management, which includes all inland and coastal aquatic environments and biota. I am also interested in nature photography and have done a fair bit of photography in Australia. Most importantly, I am very interested in environmental education and public awareness. I was really happy to see that you have been involved in capturing and communicating the environmental message in Coimbatore. I am planning to visit Cbe later this year, around November, and would be most interested to meet you and have a chat.

Dear Mr. Jayaprakash,
I was delighted to see the labels designed by you on-line.
You have hit upon a really good and novel idea to simulate interest amongst the school children.
I would like to purchase these labels in bulk for use amongst the schools that we work with in Karnataka. I hope you will be able to place orders for more.
Do let me know the costs and also what should be the minimum order.
I hope you remember me from our brief interactions at Kotagiri.
I look forward to your response.

I am an Engineer with IBM India and did my studies from Coimbatore.

I happened to Visit your Blog and was interested by the news on Anaikatti Tuskers.

Infact the last time I happened to visit Anuvavi temple, a herd of 8 elephants were roaming in that area around 8am.

I could see a lot of construction activities  taking place in that area and also a lot of Brick klins also are there.

This construction activities and human encroachment is disturbing the corridor from Anaikatti - Mettupalayam forests and Annaikatti - Attapadi corridor.

Kindly let me know also, if any action plans are initiated to bring this to the notice of authorities,as a ardent wildlife lover, would like to support the same.

Infact the population of tuskers are dwindling over years and its a matter of great happiness that Anaikatti boasts a decent male elephant population.

For one of the graphic panels in the exhibition we require an image of Caralluma Umbellata as Lady Henrietta was said to have discovered the plant. I have found an image on your website: http://www.crjayaprakash.com/photography/main.php/FLOWERS/Caralluma_umbellata.html

I would be very grateful if you could let me know whether we could use your image (and any cost implications). It would need to be A4 at 300dpi. The image would, of course, be credited to yourself.

The exhibition will be on show at National Museum Cardiff from 14 Dec 2010 - 31 March 2011. It will be in both English and Welsh and there will be no admission charge.

Recognition from THE HINDU

A write -up in THE HINDU on 22-01-2008 about our site.

A site that blends tech with environment

Amutha Kannan

FUTURISTIC: C.R. Jayaprakash, lecturer, PSG College of Arts and Science, seen with a photograph of birds from his website.

COIMBATORE: Is it possible to bring together new media and environment? A communications professional has brought about a fusion of these two in a website. C. R. Jayaprakash, lecturer in the Department of Communication, PSG College of Arts and Science, has launched a website in his name (crjayaprakash.com). The site contains pictures of birds and animals found in the Nilgiris Biosphere Reserve (NBR).

What started off as a slight interest for this botany graduate has turned into a major drive. Armed with a postgraduate degree in communication and a teaching position in college, he used his free time clicking pictures of wildlife which are in abundance in the nearby forests. But, still his thirst did not end. His urge to do something innovative drove him to experiment with two of the subjects he is teaching – new media and photography.

Till date it has a collection of 90 species of birds and animals found in the NBR. “The site can be used as a reference for NBR. It is rich in flora and fauna. Nowadays it is not difficult to take photographs, what with digital cameras. It is a good opportunity to capture the richness of Nature with such facilities. Once I click a bird or animal, I load it on to the site along with its name and basic details of its habitat. If I do not know the name, I ask the viewer if they are aware of the name. For the sake of my photography students I add details about the camera, aperture and film speed, type of lens, etc.,” says Mr. Jayaprakash.

He did not stop at that. Wanting to involve his students in his initiative, he encouraged them to post their assignments on his site. Now he has a collection of the students’ assignments as articles for reference. His intention is to collect pictures of 100 species so that he can hold an exhibition.

Why this website?

Nature ignites the passion for learning

Education begins when an infant starts exploring the wonders it encounters in the world. The wonder that excite the child is the key factor in education.

Nature is the unending store of wonders. Hence any process that restrains an individual’s direct exposure to nature is a limitation in the educational process.

Unfortunately our modern educational technology is more dependant on these artificial tools like textbooks and computers. This restrains the children from the direct exposure from nature.

Any small attempt to bring them back to the wonders of nature gives much more than we expect in education.

This site brings to you the experiences in reinventing the power of nature in igniting the young minds in their own attractive way. Hence this website,
Media and Environment.

I am trying to provide the message on Environment in the technological way, to which today’s youngsters are almost addicted at.

Most of my photographs are shot in the Nilgiris Biosphere Reserve. The blog in the right side is for my COMMUNICATION students.

This venture being a new one to me, I request you to offer your suggestions and comments for a better presentation in the coming days.
